This isn’t just a fun trash to treasure makeover, it is also helping us get organized in the mud room giving us all a few cubbies to drop our odds and ends into so they don’t all end up on the kitchen counter!
This project just took an afternoon and that includes making the cute little personalized bins with duck tape. I had so much fun with the new Frog tape waves pattern that I am now thinking about what I can do with the chevron tape!!! Ok, I am getting ahead of myself, one project at a time 🙂
Let’s show you the easy transformation of the refurbished hutch…
GETTING THE HUTCH READY TO PAINT…
Sand any rough spots. This hutch must have had a center bar that has been removed leaving some old rough patches of glue, so I sanded them down.
Next time I will also use wood filler for the holes. I didn’t think of this until I was in the middle of painting.
Clean the hutch with a damp rag and let dry completely.
Add one light coat of Kilz spray paint primer and let dry.
First coat of Burgundy Gloss Krylon spray paint and let dry completely.
Apply a second coat of paint and let dry completely.
Apply a third coat and let dry completely.
Now to add a bit of whimsy to our hutch.
I am loving this new Frog Tape that I found last time I went shopping for paint and have been waiting for the perfect project to use it on.
You can use a level matching it up to the center of the strip to make sure your waves run straight. I just kept an eye on keeping the tape the same distance from the edge on my first strip. Apply according to instructions on tape packaging.
The tape is about 1 1/2″ wide, so to add the other strips I measured over 1 1/2″ and started another strip of wave tape with the wave starting at the same place as the first strip.
To protect the hutch from overspray, I used regular painters tape and an old sheet.
Add a coat of black Gloss Krylon spray paint and let dry completely.
Add two more coats of paint and let dry completely.
Then for the FUN part… removing the paint! The kids loved helping me with this step!
Slowly pull down tape revealing the red waves behind! And don’t throw away paint because I was able to reuse on the other side! Love being frugal and recycling!
As I removed one strip of tape, I applied it to the opposite side of hutch 🙂
Add the rest of the tape strips, protect the hutch from overspray, and then add layers of black spray paint.
Ok, the sides look awesome but it needed a little more spunk so I decided to add some black stripes to the front.
I placed strips of painters tape along front edge of hutch the same width apart as the tape.
I decided just to use black craft paint and then top off with a glossy varnish when it dried.
I bought these really cute knobs at Hobby Lobby and thought they would work perfectly to hold the kids backpacks.
Just mark center, place knob, and then make marks through the holes.
Drill at marks.
Screw in knobs.
Since I am using porcelain knobs, I used the drill until my screw was sticking about 1/8″ out, and then used a screwdriver to finish.
