How to Make Caramel Apples Grinch Style

We just love caramel apples at our house and we love the Grinch so when my daughter said she wanted a few gourmet caramel apples for her friends for Christmas I decided to change it up and go Grinchy!  So with a little extra food coloring I will share how to make caramel apples Grinch style…

How to make caramel apples before picture

I was in a hurry so I forgot to take many pictures, however, I did get the before picture of the gorgeous green apples before their yummy caramel and chocolate layers!

INGREDIENTS

3 Large Granny Smith Apples – washed

1 Bag of caramels

2T water

red and green food coloring

1 cup of white chocolate chips

1/2 cup of dark chocolate chips

1 1/2 t oil

white ball sprinkles

3 popsicle sticks

First spray wax paper with oil and insert popsicle sticks into apples.  Melt the caramels and water in a small heavy sauce pan.  Once all the caramel is melted, stir in 5 drops of green food coloring and then remove from heat.  While holding an apple over the pan, spoon caramel over the apple and then place on oiled wax paper.

Add 1t of oil and 10 drops of red food coloring to the white chocolate chips and melt in a double broiler or in the microwave using only 50% power at 20-30 second intervals stirring in between.  Once the white chocolate is all melted, hold the caramel apple over the bowl and drizzle generously over the caramel layer.

For the final layer, melt the dark chocolate and lightly drizzle over the white chocolate layer and then add sprinkles immediately before moving on to the next apple because the chocolate can harden quickly.

If you are packaging these apples up and don’t have time to let them sit, be sure to stick them in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes to make sure all the chocolate is hardened up completely.  Then slide into cello bags and add tie with a cute ribbon:)
